Individual Spiritual Direction with Carolyn Lewis
“Spiritual Direction is, in reality, nothing more than a way of leading us to see…the Holy Spirit hidden in the depths of our Soul.” --Thomas Merton
Spiritual direction is the process of accompanying a person on a spiritual journey wherein a person’s inner identity may unfold, bringing meaning to the journey of life. One of the greatest gifts we may receive is to know that the Holy Spirit is indeed hidden in the depths of our soul and, thereby, affirm our own inner identity.
The object of spiritual direction is to cultivate one’s ability to discern the holy in one’s life - to notice and appreciate moments of holiness, to maintain an awareness of the interconnectedness of all things, to explore ways to be open to the holy in challenging and difficult moments as well as in joyful ones. The director serves as a companion and witness, someone who helps you (sometimes with questions, sometimes just by listening) to discern the divine where you might have missed it and to integrate that awareness into your daily life, your work, your practice. (J. Staub)
As in all journeys of faith, the final destination is only revealed as the travelers make their way. Spiritual direction is the opportunity to contemplate and reflect on your stories and your journey in a gentle one-to-one relationship with a director.
Shamanic and Esoteric Healing Sessions with Leslie S. Bryan, Practitioner Shamans are healers from many different cultures who journey outside of time and space to discover the spiritual causes for physical illness or emotional pain. Esoteric Healing practitioners are trained to recognize strengths and weaknesses in the body’s seven major energy centers or chakras. Leslie will use rituals such as lighting a candle and incense, rattling, singing and drumming. She will journey to gather information or to do healing. When the journey is complete, she will recount to you what was discovered. There may be follow-up work for you to do either on your own or with Leslie. Each journey addresses your needs or issues in a unique way.
Spiritual Direction with Meg Holden, FSP
“Spiritual direction is a process of accompanying people on a spiritual journey. It exists in the context that emphasizes growing closer to God or the holy or a higher power.” --Spiritual Directors International Spiritual Direction is a series of conversations which provide opportunities for a person to share their spiritual life within a safe, nonjudgmental and confidential environment. The one seeking spiritual direction meets with a trained director in a one-on-one session once a month. People come to receive spiritual direction for a variety of reasons, among them: when they are in need of a spiritual companion
to assist them in a time of transition, discerning a new life path, developing their prayer and spiritual lives. Perhaps you find yourself in one these areas of concern and spiritual direction maybe able to assist you further in your journey at this time. “Spiritual Direction is concerned with helping people directly with their relationship with God.” - Barry and Connelly. In spiritual direction the director listens to the sacred story of another, and acts as a guide in encouraging the person to develop their relationship with God, self, others and all of creation. In the process of spiritual direction a person is encouraged to listen, notice God’s presence and movement in prayer as well as in the events of daily life. As an extension of spiritual direction the person is invited to make use of their own individual gifts in enhancing their prayer and spiritual life through the use of the visual arts, journaling, poetry, dreams, music, dance, and in other creative forms of expression.

Spiritual Counseling Sessions with Ruqaiyah Nabe, Ordained Interfaith Minister Spiritual Counseling is for the purpose of assisting a client to the awakening, connecting (or reconnecting) and nurturing of her relationship with the Higher Power– whatever that is deemed to be: Adonai/Yahweh, Allah, Divine One, God, Great Spirit, Holy Spirit, Hosanna, Jah, Jehovah, Jesus or Universal Spirit. Spiritual Counseling is not psychiatry, psychology, psychoanalysis or psychotherapy, but a counselee may see a mental health professional while seeing a spiritual counselor. The spiritual counselor walks beside the counselee as she embarks upon and moves along the journey within and beyond-reaching for the Higher Power by including her faith base and/or spiritual practice into the activities of daily living and aiming for optimal spiritual health, balance and well being.
Spiritual Counseling Sessions with Karen O’Brien
Spiritual Counseling helps you to live in the present moment & supports you in healing & restoring your conscious connection to your soul & to the spiritual dimension. It trusts that the soul within each of us is ever present & always leading us to wholeness, spiritual maturity, freedom & full aliveness. This natural process is often blocked, which can result in suffering of many kinds. Through the practice of presence, deep listening & compassionate inquiry, I’ll help you to more clearly know & experience who you are & your most natural way of being & living in the world. While resting in & cultivating an atmosphere of unconditional acceptance and welcome, we’ll engage all parts of your being—body, mind, emotions and spirit—allowing for expanded awareness & greater levels of body, personality & soul alignment & empowerment. Spiritual Counseling supports you in finding, trusting & following your particular path as a soul on earth while embracing & honoring your full humanity. It connects you more fully with your inner knowing, spiritual strengths & gifts, soul guidance & purpose & your vast spiritual resources so that health, harmony, well-being & freedom are restored at all levels of your being & living, person to planet.
Massage & Energy Healing with Julia Perez, LMT
I like to create a safe and sacred place that is nurturing and supportive for each individual—a respite from the rush of everyday life. I use music, candles, light fragrances and a warm gentle touch to calm the senses and encourage relaxation. I see massage as a way of caring for someone through the physical act of touching. With the expression of this healing art, I want to channel peace and aliveness throughout the body. The core of massage, for me, lies in its unique way of communicating without words. I combine Swedish and deep tissue massage, Aromatherapy, Reflexology and Energy Healing. Swedish massages consist of long flowing strokes, deep kneading, light tapping and joint movement. Energy Healing is spiritually-guided, life force energy and is non-invasive--using soft light touch on the body or the placement of hands above the body to focus energy. Energy Healing promotes healing, increases energy and vitality, relieves pain, creates harmony and awareness, promotes serenity, loosens blocked energy, works on relationships and on emotional and mental stress.
Psychosynthesis Counseling & Wholistic Life Coaching with Renee Welde, M.S., NCC
Psychosynthesis is a “Psychology with a soul”, allowing us to discover who we most deeply are and what our life purpose is, bringing greater joy, wisdom and well-being to ourselves and the world. Psychosynthesis is a model that moves toward health, wholeness and potential rather than pathology. As a guide in service to your growth, healing modalities include: deep listening, intuition, guided imagery, role-playing, inner dialogue, conversations with a Wise-Being, creativity, journaling, EFT, and accessing your will. I work most successfully with women’s issues, anxiety and depression, loss or grief, stress management, life transitions, fears, parenting, life purpose and potential, and personal and career development.
Spiritual Direction with Nancy Walsh, MSW, MPA
“We are living in a world that is absolutely transparent to God, and God is shining through it all the time. This is not a fable or a nice story. It is true. God manifests everywhere, in every thing, in people, in things and in nature and in events. You cannot be without God. It¹s impossible! Simply impossible!” Thomas Merton
Are there times when you find your usual forms of prayer seem to be missing the mark or just aren’t fulfilling? Do you desire to deepen your prayer life but don’t know how? Do you notice, at times, that you are missing, indeed longing for an experience of God in your everyday life and are at a loss as to how to go about filling that need? Spiritual Direction might be of help. It is a process that can enable one to re–experience our journey and understand our everyday experiences in the light of God’s love for us. Spiritual Direction provides the opportunity to meet with a trained Director once a month for about 45 minutes to share/talk about what is happening in one’s everyday prayer life and to become aware of God’s presence in our prayer, in our lives, and in all things.

Set and Reach Your Health Goals |
Wednesday, September 8 | | 6:30-8:30PM |
Facilitator: Marcia Berry |
| |
If I asked you right now, "Quick, what are five changes you could make in your life right now that could lead to a longer, healthier life?"
you could probably come up with some pretty good suggestions. So why aren't you doing them already? Knowing what to do, and translating that knowledge
into action, are often two entirely different things. This workshop draws on my background in business and nutrition to bring you the secrets of how to
set and achieve your health goals. It borrows principles from business management, from the teachings of Dr. Stephen Covey (author of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People), motivational speaker Tony Robbins, the Franklin time management system, and my personal
experience with clients and in my own life. By empowering participants to take positive action to improve their wellbeing, this workshop aims to give
participants an increased sense of self-esteem and control over their own health by creating and then working toward realistic health goals. The
session includes: identifying your dreams and purpose in life; how diet affects your brain, thoughts, emotions, and actions; how you can move toward
the life you want through the food you eat; a quick assessment of your current health; the scientific reasons why people who set goals are more
successful; making your goals SMART; some safe and effective suggestions for balancing your condition; the role of exercise, the worst forms of
exercise, and which type of exercise is right for you; a sample program: Seven Steps to Health; set your own personal long and short-term health goals;
and create a specific action to accomplish those goals. Participants will leave this workshop with a complete set of written health goals and an action
plan with timelines for achieving those goals.

Tai Chi Easy™ & Qigong Class |
Mondays, Sept. 13, Oct. 4 & 25, Nov. 1 & 22, Dec. 6 & 20, Jan. 31, Feb 7 & 28 | | 6:15-7:30 PM |
Facilitator: Melissa Elstein |

This class is a simplified, yet healing and meditative version of Tai Chi, created by Roger Jahnke, OMD, in order to make Tai Chi and Qigong accessible to everyone. The five flowing Tai Chi sequences are practiced seated, standing, and/or walking. Both the Tai Chi and the Qigong movements increase balance and coordination skills, as well as create a peaceful state of mind in order to promote inner healing within the practitioner. Simple Qigong self-healing techniques, such as self-massage, breath work, gentle repetitive movement, laughing exercises, spontaneous Qigong, and meditation may also be employed in the class. If you are curious about Tai Chi or Qigong and their healing qualities, or if you had previously tried Tai Chi and found you could not memorize the sequences, this class is for you! There is no need to memorize a complicated series of movements. In Tai Chi Easy™, the teacher guides the class by example, yet one's individual and unique style of movement is valued rather than corrected or changed. The class emphasis is on connecting movement with breath, increasing one's vitality, and engaging in a "moving meditation." One learns to feel the energy (chi, prana, or life-force energy) that emanates from one's hands and learns how to manipulate and play with that energy to promote mental, physical, and spiritual well-being. For more information on this style of Tai Chi, please see www.taichieasy.org. All levels are welcome, from the experienced practitioner to beginners!YOU MAY ATTEND ANY ONE OR ALL CLASSES.

MY SONG IS OUT NOW: The Workshop |
Tuesday, September 14; Wednesday, November 17 & Wednesday, January 5 | | 6:30-8:30 PM |
Facilitator: Ruth Levy Abramson |
| |
Are you longing to open up and sing? Do you love to sing but feel embarrassed, shy or insecure about your voice? Singing from the heart is one of life's purest pleasures but too often we block ourselves from experiencing, enjoying and expressing ourselves. Instead of appreciating and developing what is special about our voices, we worry about how we think we 'should' sound and if we sound 'good'. This workshop is an opportunity to unplug from all of that and learn how to honor and celebrate your unique voice and style. Called 'wonderfully spontaneous' by past participants, this workshop is fun, empowering, inspiring and profoundly healing. Using supportive, personal and group exercises, you will conquer fears, connect with your natural creative instincts and amaze and move yourself and others with the beauty and power of your voice-even if you never thought you could sing. *Absolutely no singing experience or skill is needed. YOU MAY ATTEND ANY ONE OR ALL 3 SESSIONS.

"
When we truly care for ourselves, it becomes possible to care more profoundly about other people. The more alert and sensitive we are to our own needs, the more loving and generous we can be towards others."
Eda Le Shan
A woman's life is a journey that is filled with twists and turns, stops and starts. And sometimes it is difficult to maneuver the road. There are many things along the way that we need to pick up like new lessons, new friendships. There are also things we need to let go of like dead relationships, toxic people and ideals.
"If you have knowledge, let others light their candles in it."
Margaret Fuller
Come join one, two or all of our monthly gatherings, traveling with other women on this sacred journey. We will discuss what it means to be in transition and how to walk the sacred journey with peace and joy. We will pray together, share together, laugh together, and perhaps cry together on this path to peace and newness of life and love.
"We either make ourselves miserable, or we make ourselves strong.
The amount of work is the same."
Carlos Castaneda
Bring a willingness to let go and to take up; letting go of hurt, fear, shame and the things that no longer serve us. And taking up peace, passion, purpose, and play!
"Remember no one can make you feel inferior without your consent."
Eleanor Roosevelt

Facilitator: Melissa Elstein |

Would you like to explore traditional yoga poses, such as twists, backbends and forward bends, in a new format?
Do you work long hours seated in front of a computer, and would like to learn how to stretch and tone while at your desk?
Have you wanted to learn yoga and experience the benefits of yoga stretches and meditation but were unable to do floor yoga?
Chair yoga is a fun and creative way to explore yoga stretches in a format off the yoga mat. You will be amazed at how effective it is, even if you are
used to practicing yoga on the floor. During this class, we practice gentle yoga stretches and strengthening exercises all while seated in a chair.
Optional standing poses using the chair as a support enhance the balancing poses. At the end of our yoga practice, we will learn a seated meditation and the ancient practice of "Yoga Nidra" - a guided visualization that helps release tension in the body, and calms the mind. You will feel stretched, toned, and relaxed at the end of class. And you will leave with tools for de-stressing at the office, on an airplane, or even on the subway! YOU MAY ATTEND ANY ONE OR ALL CLASSES. ALL LEVELS ARE WELCOME. NO PRIOR YOGA OR MEDITATION EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY.

Every aspect of your life is affected by the food you eat. Because our brains cells are created from food, our diet determines our thoughts and consciousness. It covers:
- The SAD Diet (Standard American Diet) and its toll on Americans.
- The 2 most important foods to eat starting right now.
- The 3 deadliest types of foods.
- Proteins vs. carbohydrates: the surprising results of scientific studies.
- How to tell if your diet is imbalanced, and the easiest way to get back on track.
- Guidelines for choosing foods.
- The 3 most important changes to start making right now.

"If you keep telling the same sad small story, you will keep living the same sad small life."
Jean Houston
Our lives are made up of stories and the story we live is full of emotions. Most of those emotions are unsettling and cause us to lead lives of pain and struggle. We can make the conscious choice to change our story, lessening the emotional charge around them, thus creating the lives we envision and desire. In this monthly gathering, we will talk about the stories we live and transform them into the stories we desire to live. Dealing with issues of
anger and forgiveness, pain and loss, we will journey to that place of freedom and peace. Life is not meant to be a struggle. Life is meant to be lived with passion and flow. Make the choice to create a new story; it is in telling our old story that we can heal our emotions. YOU MAY ATTEND ANY ONE OR ALL SESSSIONS.

Okay, so you're tired of trying to find "Mr. Right."
You've tried everything: on-line dating; speed dating; singles' events, blind dates; bars & nightclubs, but, you're still SINGLE! Now, try this: Dating Differently: Getting From Dating to Marriage
A Spiritual Approach to Receiving the Love of Your Life & How to Honor Yourself Along the Way
A SPECIAL WORKSHOP FOR WOMEN IN 12-STEP PROGRAMS |
Friday, September 24 from 6:30-8PM & Saturday, September 25 | | 10AM-4PM |
Facilitator: Dianne Drummey Marino |
| |
Are you longing for marriage, but nothing you've tried has worked? Do you often wonder, 'What am I doing wrong?' 'What's wrong with me?' Do you worry that God's plan for you might not include marriage? Women often say, "There are no nice men out there!" or they'll ask married women, "Where did you meet your husband," as if they could go there too, like a shopping mall, & find their soul mate! If you're looking for a magic pill, this workshop
isn't it. It's not about how to flirt or how to fill out the perfect online dating profile because if you're not ready, emotionally & spiritually, to receive your soul mate, he could sit down right next to you & you might not even "recognize" him, or worse, you might unknowingly push him away. In this workshop, you'll learn to identify your old, unconscious, ineffective relationship patterns and how to replace them with healthy, estimable attitudes & new behaviors, like setting boundaries - behaviors that increase your confidence & self-esteem & move you closer to being ready to receive your true love. Dianne Drummey was worried, too. An Emmy-award winning NBC News producer, her career was thriving but she despaired of ever finding the love of her life & marrying. Finally, after many failed relationships, Dianne decided her way was JUST NOT WORKING! So she radically changed her whole approach to dating & it worked! She's been married since 2000 to the most wonderful man in the world for her & feels profoundly blessed every day. Dianne will lead you through the same process of change she was "guided" through. Using handouts, writing exercises, sharing & support from other women, her inter-active workshop will give you renewed hope & the tools & resources to take a pro-active approach to realizing your dream.
IMPORTANT: PLEASE WRITE AN IN-DEPTH RELATIONSHIP HISTORY& BRING IT WITH YOU.

Anyone who has ever cared for a child, spouse, parent, sibling or friend in need, knows very quickly the mental, physical, emotional and financial demands of care giving. The National Family Caregiving Association tells us that caregivers suffer more depression, anxiety and stress than the general population. In this ongoing monthly support group, we will create sacred space where we can listen, share stories, learn emotional wellness techniques and empower each other to become visionaries in our own lives, which will in turn benefit the lives of our loved ones. Tuesday, October 5 & Thursday, January 13 | | 6:30-8:30PM |
Facilitator: Pauline Yun |

As a certified 7 Ray healing practitioner, I channel divine light energy through my hands. Each ray is administered for one minute, 3 inches away from the affected area. All of the rays possess specific forces for healing different physical, emotional and mental conditions. Each session is specifically geared for the person and condition and creates orderly molecular energy out of disorder. While each person experiences something different, the effects are all beneficial. We'll begin the evening with a brief introduction to the 7 Rays followed by a clearing meditation to prepare for the healings. Then, I'll work individually on each person as needed, administering either one or two rays. Yoga mats are recommended for those who prefer to be lying down. YOU MAY ATTEND ANY ONE OR BOTH SESSIONS.

Feed Your Child Right |
Tuesday, October 19 | | 6:30-8:30PM |
Facilitator: Marcia Berry |
| |
The food your child eats has a major impact on the quality of his or her life, both now, and in the future. Your child's diet affects:
- His or her activity level
- Alertness and performance in school
- Physical strength and stamina
- Mood (particularly important in toddlers and teenagers!)
- Growth and physical development
- Strong bone formation
- Susceptibility to allergies
- Ability to fend off acute illness, such as colds, ear infections and strep.
- The formation of healthy habits that can last a lifetime.
Feeding your child right is tricky, because it involves not only knowing what foods to serve, but also the psychology of getting your child to actually eat those foods. It also involves combating peer pressure and other outside influences that may tempt your child to indulge in unhealthy foods, such as birthday parties and Halloween. This seminar covers all these topics, and also includes tips and tricks for getting your child to eat vegetables, lunchbox and snack suggestions and recipes, and a solid question-and-answer session to address participants' individual concerns.

This session will be based on the book written by Mary Ruth Broz, RSM and Barbara Flynn. It is meant to be like a mini-retreat evening away from the 'hustle and bustle' of our everyday lives. You will be invited into sacred space and guided through a time of reflection on the theme being addressed, songs accompanying the theme, meditative quiet "simmering time" for your own spiritual journey, and group sharing.
Come and share your journey with us.

Menopause From a Traditional Chinese Perspective: Our Second Spring |
Tuesday, November 2 | | 6:30-8:30PM |
Facilitator: Alix Keast |
| |
In Chinese medicine menopause is thought of as our "second spring". It represents the beginning of the second, and more spiritual, half of our life. The traditional Chinese approach explains the passage of menopause as a synthesis of physical, emotional and spiritual changes, and is very beautiful as well as inspiring. Having this understanding before I went through menopause changed my experience, as I hope it will for any pre-menopausal women who would want to take the workshop. It would also be interesting and helpful to women who have already gone through menopause, as it gives a new way of looking at the aging process as empowering and truly full of grace.

Feed Your Inner Woman: Diet & Women's Health |
Wednesday, November 3 | | 6:30-8:30PM |
Facilitator: Marcia Berry |
| |
Women go to the doctor four times more often than men, and it's not just because we're more in tune with our bodies. What used to be called "female troubles" account for a large portion of those doctor's visits: Over 40% of women have fibroid tumors. By age 60, over half of American women have had their uterus or ovaries removed. Up to 25% of American women suffer from some degree of osteoporosis. One in 8 women will develop breast cancer. And untold others suffer from PMS, debilitating menstrual cramps, reduced fertility, and aggravating symptoms of menopause. Proper diet and nutrition can go a long way toward alleviating these problems and nurturing the strong, powerful women we are meant to be.
This seminar will cover:
- An overview of the female hormones.
- How hormones affect the health of our reproductive organs.
- Foods that can affect hormones: positively or negatively.
- The main dietary causes of yeast infections and cystitis.
- Tips for a healthy menstrual cycle and a hassle-free menopause.
- How to protect against osteoporosis.
- Care of the breasts.
- Avoiding breast, uterine and ovarian cancer.

The Art of Prayer |
Tuesday, November 9 & Thursday, February 10 | | 6:30-8:30PM |
Facilitator: Pauline Yun |
| |
I have been taught that prayer is the most powerful thing we can do. It connects us to source energy, which fuels our entire being. While many may think of prayer as begging or pleading, Mother Mary speaks about the importance and methods of prayer in the channeled book Mary's Message to the World. In this workshop, we'll discuss in depth the nature of prayer and its many forms, which include desire, personal prayer, automatic prayer, healing, gratitude, statements of truth, admiration, joy, meditation and faith. We will then each write our own prayers to suit our specific needs and then end with a group prayer for planet Earth.YOU MAY ATTEND ANY ONE OR BOTH WORKSHOPS.

Winter is a time when we often step back and reflect and withdraw inwards. Holidays in the winter time use candles, supplying extra light as the days get darker earlier. Breathing Into the Mystery: An Introduction to Rebirthing Breathwork |
Saturday, November 13 | | 1-5PM |
Facilitator: Malou Thein |
| |
Rebirthing is a way of initiation into the depth of our own authentic being. By using the breath in a specific way we release layers of stored trauma, repressed emotions and dis-ease. We gain greater health, we gain qualities and parts of ourselves, which lie beyond our conscious knowing; we access potential and resources, progressively embracing true wholeness. Breathwork is feminine in nature - it is gentle yet powerful. It is a practice of deep surrender to the wisdom and spirit within. During the workshop we will prepare the space and ourselves through simple movement, meditation and chanting. Each woman will experience her own session in a unique and safe way. What transpires during a session is something sacred, and exactly what is required for each person. Please wear comfy clothes. You may bring a sleeping bag, blanket and your favorite pillow for comfort if you like. The Center has some. Also bring an object (for the altar), which represents a feminine quality or essence and is meaningful to you. Please have a light lunch before class, and bring water, a snack, and a notepad. Limited enrollment based on a conversation with the facilitator.

The Poetry of Mary Oliver: "My work is loving the world." Messenger |
Tuesday, November 16 | | 6:30-8:30pm |
Facilitator: Meg Holden, FSP |
| |
In writing her poems, Mary Oliver draws inspiration from the natural world. In her home environment of Provincetown, Massachusetts, where she is surrounded by ocean and sky, whales and birds, she is frequently seen walking and standing still as she "sees" and reflects on what is before her. Mary Oliver invites us to gaze at the world around us, beginning with the ordinary. She encourages us to slow down and take notice of the beauty that the world has to offer in very simple ways. If we begin to "look" at the world around us we may start to live in a different way. It is through her poetry that Mary Oliver can help us do just that!
"Everything I see and hear that more or less kills me with delight, that leaves me like a needle in a haystack of light. It was what I was born for - to look, to listen, to lose myself inside this soft world to instruct myself over and over in joy." Mindful
In this workshop we will listen to some of Mary Oliver's poems. As a response to her work, we will take time for quiet reflection, journaling and/or poem-making, followed by sharing.
"When I am among the trees, especially the willows and the honey locust, equally the beech, the oaks and the pines, they give off such hints of gladness. I would almost say that they save me, and daily."

The Red Thread: Motherhood by Adoption |
Tuesday, November 30 | | 6:30-8:30PM |
Facilitator: Alix Keast |
| |
We adopted our daughter Emma 14 years ago in Nanjing, China. I can say without a doubt that it was the best thing I have ever done in my life, but the journey leading up to having Emma in my arms was daunting in many ways. This workshop is especially for women considering adopting and for those in the process of adopting, and will focus on the many emotions that I encountered on my way. I hope that by sharing my story, I can provide a safe and supportive place for others to bring their own hopes and fears into the light, and that this will help make it easier to move forward on this incredible path. In Chinese tradition it is believed that those destined to meet are connected by a red thread, even before they come in contact with each other. I know Emma was the child meant to be mine, and that this is true for all of the adoptive families I know.

Stressed Out? Chill Out! Using Food to Banish Stress |
Wednesday, December 1 | | 6:30-8:30PM |
Facilitator: Marcia Berry |
| |
Financial meltdown! Global warming! Family tension! Who doesn't have stress these days? Can anyone be blamed for turning to Ben & Jerry's for a little comfort? It's true that ice cream, alcohol, doughnuts and other "comfort foods" may help you forget your troubles for a few hours. But many people don't realize that those foods actually increase stress in the long run. Don't worry; relief is at hand. There are some special foods that function as true "comfort foods" by helping you drastically reduce the stress in your body. With just a little knowledge and a few changes, you can learn to create a deep, long-lasting calm in your body and your life. Here are some of the topics we will explore:
- Which foods contribute to feelings of tension, stress, and anger?
- Which foods make you peaceful, positive and alert?
- The role of blood sugar and what to do about it.
- How the way you cook can affect the “stress quotient” of your food.
- Why your stress level is affected by the way you eat.
- Your personal recipe for relief.

Contemporary Images of Mary of Nazareth in Art and Word |
Thursday, December 9 | | 6:30-8:30pm |
Facilitator: Meg Holden, FSP |
| |
|
What is your image of Mary? Is it one that is clouded by Marian history in art and word that depicts her as a person who seems elevated and beyond human reach? This workshop presents a modern interpretation of Mary as "real" through the works of a writer, a poet and a painter.
Theologian Elizabeth Johnson in her work, "Truly Our Sister" has done extensive research on Mary and her place in history. She presents Mary as a young Jewish maiden of humble origins living in a small rural village. Johnson depicts Mary as she truly was, an observant Jew who lived an ordinary life, until one day in her "annunciation" she was asked to do something extraordinary.
"The Annunciation presents a powerful example of a young girl's positive response
to the invitation of God operating within history." Elizabeth Johnson
Through her poem "Annunciation" British born American poet Denise Levertov reflects on Mary's own choice to be the mother of Jesus. She writes in her poem of the 'annunciations' that appear in our lives as well, when she states, "Aren't there annunciations of one sort of another in most lives? More often those moments . . . are turned away from in dread, in a wave of weakness, in despair and with relief." Internationally acclaimed Afro-American painter, Henry Ossawa Turner in his painting "Annunciation" also creates a different image of Mary. Tanner had spent time in Palestine in the 1920's and sketched the people he saw there as they were. In his painting of Mary he portrays her as she was, a young girl with olive skin and dark hair, dressed in a simple cotton garment of a poor person. He removes that mistaken image of Mary as we have known her in European paintings and makes her "real."
"I paint things that I see and believe . . ." Tanner
This workshop strives to take Mary down from her pedestal and helps us to view her as a person, who like us, dealt with human choices. Time will be given to reflect on these three contemporary images of Mary followed by sharing.

- Where does spirituality come from?
- A tour of your energetic body.
- The connection between food and spirit.
- The foods, cooking styles and eating habits that enhance spirituality and intuition.
- Care of your “aura.”

For example, she eliminated chronic yeast and urinary tract infections. Her eyesight, which had been steadily deteriorating, improved a full diopter and continues to improve.
